The National Academic Higher Education Agency LLC NACHED is a Washington DC based national accrediting board, founded in 1974 to provide a consistent measurement of the acceptability of private schools (K-12), adult high schools, vocational and technical schools, private colleges and postsecondary education. Certificates, diplomas and degrees earned through online, distance taught, evaluation of experiential learning and other non-traditional means are all considered.
Unlike US regional accreditation (which is divided into 6 territorial regions). NACHED is a national association, providing services to private high schools, universities, colleges and institutes in the United States and worldwide.
For many years, traditional "classroom" education has been augmented by correspondence courses. Although correspondence courses of the past were considered to be "traditional" education, they were never as fully accepted because they depended on slow methods of communication and little or no interaction with peers.

The Internet provides individuals with access to more information than ever before, and communication technologies allow instantaneous interaction between learner and instructor.
Because of this new technology, traditional learning is changing from its single profile of the "classroom-student-teacher", to include additional profiles of "individual-Internet-self study", and " individual-mentor-practical experience".
Technology has erased traditional barriers of time, space and place and represent the capacity to fundamentally change the standard for transmitting knowledge and skills from master to learner. The accessibility, economy, effectiveness and convenience, online learning is sweeping higher education and forever changing the role of traditional learning to a marketplace that some institutions would prefer not to enter. Whether one is for or against distance learning, one cannot escape its impact. The www is the most visible, graphical and fastest-growing part of the Internet.
NACHED studied the role of the www in education in recent years, and found that many individuals learn as well or better through a self study process using appropriate integration of technology via the internet, combined with their own experiences, than those in a traditional classroom setting. The NACHED study also indicates that many adult students find distance learning attractive and that the population seeking postsecondary education is growing faster than the current institutions ability to meet the demand.
Accreditation by NACHED provides assurance to the public and prospective students, that an institution has been found to meet the U.S. higher education criteria requirements.
Accreditation provides certification of acceptable institutional quality as well as an opportunity and incentive for improvement. NACHED approves only those institutions that allow an examination of appropriate criteria and meets its accreditation requirements. The accredited process also provides an opportunity for a critical self-analysis to enhance improvement in quality.
Private schools, public schools, colleges and universities that gain accreditation by NACHED are committed to provide qualified degreed students that meet and in most cases exceeds the qualifications of traditionally accredited schools, colleges and universities. NACHED's mission and purpose is to provide prospective employers with a resource of acceptability of private school diplomas and college degrees by major corporations worldwide.
NACHED accreditation is based not on the school's, college's or university's academic program content, but upon more realistic qualifications, such as an analysis of the practicality of their distance learning program and the acceptability of their diploma or degree holder's credentials. The integrity, reliability and opportunities for career advancement are of primary concern when evaluating a school for possible accreditation.
NACHED does not seek approval from individual agencies, or any other accrediting board. NACHED's accrediting process serves to validate a level of acceptability of school diplomas and college degrees and the institution's commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
